その4 冨里スイカオーナー
この夏は、富里市のスイカオーナー制度に夫と共に参加し、スイカ収穫の体験をしました。富里市は、スイカマラソンで有名なように、スイカが特産物です。今年はふるさと納税の一環としてスイカオーナーを募集しており、面白そうなので私たちも参加しました。
そういえば昔、子供がまだ保育園に通っていたころに、家庭菜園でいろいろな野菜を育てたことがあります。苗を買ってきて自己流で育てましたが、ミニトマトやキュウリ、ナスなどはうまく育って、新鮮なものを食べることができました。そうそう、トウモロコシもできました。スーパーで売っているように粒がびっしりときれいにはつかず、見た目はできそこないのようでした。でも、ゆでて食べるととっても甘く、感動したものです。ところが、スイカは苗を買って育ててみても小さなスイカの赤ちゃんまでしか育たず、「やはりスイカを育てるのは難しいのだろう」とあきらめました。
さて、今回は、受粉と収穫の時期に2回、富里市の畑を訪れて、スイカ栽培の農業体験をしました。5月中頃に1回目の訪問があり、受粉作業を習いました。まず、市役所の会議室に集まって、スイカ栽培についてのスライドを使った説明がありました。1月にスイカの種をまいて発芽させ、その後接ぎ木をしたり、間引きをしたり・・・いろいろな手間がかかっています。さて、その後訪れたスイカ畑では、畑は一列ずつ、上げ下ろしできるビニールのカバーで覆われてトンネルのようになっており、適宜風通しや温度の調節をします。私たちの訪問日は、トンネルの中にミツバチを放して、受粉をさせているところでした。雌花のすぐ下の茎のところには、すでに小さな実がついています。受粉をすれば実は大きく育ちますが、受粉しなければ実は大きくならないそうです。ああ、それで昔、自分で育てた時にはスイカが大きくならなかったんだ、と合点がいきました。トマトやキュウリは花が咲けば実がなっていたので、スイカの受粉を確認するところまで頭が回りませんでした。人生、いくつになっても学ぶことがありますね。この日は、割り当てられたスイカの苗の前に自作の立て札を立て、受粉を確認した花の茎に印をつけて終了です。帰る前に、ハウスで育てたスイカを目の前で切って、参加者にごちそうしてくれました。その甘くて美味しかったこと！
2回目は6月末で、スイカマラソンの頃です。いよいよ収穫なのでワクワクします。自分に割り当てられた畑では、4個大きなスイカが育っており、そのうち2個を自分で選んで持って帰れます。スイカ畑では、スイカだけではなく、ツルや葉っぱもトンネルの中で大きく育っており、まるでジャングルのようでした。夫は体が大きすぎて、中に入れませんでした。そこで私が腰をかがめて畑に入り、手と脚をスパイダーマンのように伸ばして、スイカを捜しました。「あ、あった、ここにも！」できるだけ大きそうなスイカを2個選んで、転がして外に出しました。重さを測るとなんと1個10キロ以上あり、4Lの大きさだということでした。「やったー！」最後に布でスイカの汚れを取りきれいに磨いて、出荷用の箱に詰めて持って帰りました。
自分で収穫したスイカを冷やして食べると、やはりとても美味しく、うちのワンコたちも恩恵にあずかりました。私が1回目の訪問の時に撮った、受粉の際のミツバチのビデオを3歳の孫に送ったところ、何度も繰り返して楽しんだそうです。今回、スイカ栽培の楽しめる場面に参加させてもらう良い体験でしたが、農家の方の種まきから収穫までの全体の労力はとても大変だろうと思い遣られました。
Part4 “Watermelon Owner System in Tomisato”
This summer, my husband and I participated in the Watermelon Owner System of Tomisato City, Chiba, and experienced the harvest of watermelons. As famous with the Watermelon Marathon, watermelons are the representative product of Tomisato City. This year, the city called for watermelon owners as one option of Furusato Nouzei, and we applied for, because it looked interesting.
Long time ago, when my daughters were small children, I grew various vegetables and fruits in my home garden. I bought young plants of cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and egg plants, grew them, harvested them very fresh and enjoyed eating them. I remember harvesting corns with ugly looking in contrast with the ones sold at a supermarket, but they tasted impressively sweet. However, I haven’t succeeded in harvesting watermelons－the fruits grew only as big as a tennis ball. I gave up growing watermelons, thinking, “It must be very hard to grow them properly.”
This time, we had agricultural experience by visiting Tomisato twice at pollination and at harvest. In the middle of May, we paid the first visit and learned about the pollination of watermelons. They explained how to grow watermelons using color slides in a meeting room at the City Hall Building. They seed in January, perform grafting and pull out smaller plants: It requires so many works. Then, we went to the watermelon fields to find that the plants are growing in rows covered with removable vinyl sheets, looking like tunnels. They can open or close sheets to control airflow and temperature in the tunnels. On the day we visited, they let bees fly inside the tunnels and pollinate the flowers of watermelons. Female flowers have tiny fruits on the stem just beneath the flower. If the flower is pollinated, the fruit grows big, and if not, it doesn’t grow. That explained why I could not grow watermelon big long time ago. I didn’t imagine I had to make sure about pollination, because I could easily get tomatoes and cucumbers once their flowers bloomed. We always have something new to learn at any age. We put up the name tag we had made in front of the assigned area, marked two flowers which we made sure pollination was done, and that was it for the day. Before we left, they treated us with slices of watermelon which they had grown in a greenhouse. How sweet and juicy it tasted!
Our second visit was at the end of June and also it was the time for Watermelon Marathon. We were excited at the thought of harvesting our watermelons. There were four big watermelons growing in our assigned patch, and we can select two of them to take with us. At the watermelon field, it looked like a jungle with all overgrown vines and leaves in the tunnel. My husband could not get in, because he was too big. So, I folded my body and stepped in the tunnel, then search watermelons by stretching my four limbs in all directions like a spider man. “Found one! Another one here!” I chose two big ones and rolled them out of the tunnel. They weighed more than 10 kg each, which equals the size 4L. We were happy enough. We cleaned and polished our watermelons with a towel, packed them in a box for shipping and took them home.
Our watermelon was so delicious that we gave some to our pet dogs, and they were happy. My three-year-old granddaughter enjoyed my video of a bee pollinating watermelon flowers, watching it again and again. I enjoyed the experience at the watermelon field this time, but I could imagine that the whole work from seeding through harvest was very, very hard.
