Part2 “Chihuly Glass and Art”

My family and I have lived in three areas in the United States. They are Cleveland, New York and Houston, which are located in the north, east and south part of the country, respectively. The only regret of mine about our life in the US, if any, is that we did not have a chance to live on the West Coast. I have wished for living there, because the area is well known for mild climate, Asian-friendly culture and frontier spirits.

Now, one of my daughters and her family live in Seattle, which is located on the West Coast. I can visit her and feel a bit of the life there. This past September, I visited Seattle with my husband and had a very good time with my daughter and her family. The upper photo shows Space Needle, which is located in the center of Seattle. Space needle is an observation tower which is 184 meter high, and is known as a landmark of Seattle. My daughter told me that the floor of the observation deck is made of glass and that they can see below through the glass floor. How exciting and scary!

This time our aim was something else, so we passed by the Space Needle and entered nearby Chihuly Garden and Glass. Dale Chihuly, an American artist who was born in Tacoma, Washington, studied design and glass art in universities in the United States, worked in a glass factory in Venice, Italy, and opened this art museum in 2014. Although I had expected something practical, such as artistic glass vases or interior ornaments, his art pieces were totally different. They were huge, tall, curling, twisting and very colorful as you can see in the photo. Some of the exhibits had motifs which looked like seashells and octopuses, demonstrating Dale Chihuly’s interest in life in the sea. From one room to another, artistic series of different themes were shown, as if we entered the artist’s fantasy world. Different from other ordinary art museums, you can take as many pictures as you like. And you will be very impressed that the pictures are so “outstanding in Instagram.”

There were two small exhibits I found particularly interesting. In both pieces, an octopus was made so real both in shape and size, with long and waving feet holding cylindrical objects. As far as I know, most Americans think octopuses grotesque. (In contrast, we Japanese think them cute, maybe because we eat them.) Dale Chihuly has very unique art senses, that’s for sure. You can see many pictures of this art museum at their homepage.※1
